CCTV Cameras Explained

CCD and CMOS – Is a charge-coupled device (CCD) or complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS). These are two kinds of image sensing systems used in cameras and camcorders, converting an optical image into an electronic signal. There is just a small difference between the two systems, and CCD is generally thought to result in slightly better image quality.

H.264 – H.264 is short for H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10 or AVC (Advanced Video Coding). It is a common standard for compressing video files. It represents one of the most frequently used formats for recording, compressing and distributing high-definition video. This format can handle (HD) 720p and 1080p video without sacrificing quality.

IP – IP stands for Internet Protocol. An IP camera is a digital camera that can send and receive data via the internet or a Local Area Network (LAN). IP cameras are most commonly used for security and surveillance. Internet access means that the video recorded on the IP camera has the potential to be stored and viewed anywhere in the world. IP cameras usually transmit their data wirelessly. They don’t require the installation of cables so they are easier to set up and re-position when needed.

Lumens – The brightness of a light is measured in lumens. The lumen rating tells you the overall brightness of a LED light or a LED projector is capable of producing. To give you an example, an average car headlight is between 800 and 1,200 lumens.

PTZ – PTZ stands for pan, tilt, and zoom. A PTZ camera can be controlled remotely, either manually or automatically. This allows you to adjust the position of the camera, focusing in on movement or any activity that interests you. PTZ cameras and systems enable you to monitor a large area with a single camera, or a small number of cameras in a network.

IP (or “Ingress Protection”) Rating – Is not to be confused with Internet protocol! The IP rating lets you know how well it is protected from the elements. The first digit is the resistance solids such as dust and dirt particles and goes from 0 which is no protection to 6 which is dust tight. The second digit it the water resistance and goes from no protection at 0 to Immersion beyond 1 meter at 8. A typical outdoor waterproof security camera will have an IP66, IP67, or IP68 rating. An indoor camera will likely lack this protection.
